District Safety Procedures

September 9, 2019

Dear Garcia Families,

Recently our superintendent posted a letter and a video regarding school safety on our district web site.  ( https://nisd.net/news/articles/82136)  As a school, we constantly review our campus safety procedures. We are also required to have an updated Emergency Operation Plan (EOP), undergo a physical audit by the district’s safety officer, as well as conduct emergency drills with staff and students throughout the year.

In our efforts to improve safety procedures, we have adopted the “Run, Hide, Fight” approach in dealing with an active shooter should there ever be one. This strategy has been recommended by safety experts and law enforcement agencies across our country including the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. A video has been produced to accompany discussions that we will have with our students regarding this strategy.

The safety video will be shown on Thursday, September 26, 2019 during our GRIT schedule.  Your child’s GRIT teacher will present the video and answer any questions students may have. As mentioned in the superintendent’s letter, I recommend that you preview the video with your son/daughter.  Administrators and counselors will be available in the library on Friday, September 27th at 8:00 AM if students have questions or concerns after watching the video. You can also go to shooter@fema.com for additional information regarding this topic.

Thank you for your support of our efforts to keep our schools safe.

Sincerely,

Tracy Wernli

Principal
