As the Executive Director of Communications and spokesman for Northside ISD, Barry Perez is responsible for keeping the public informed of the news and events of Texas’ fourth largest school district.

Perez has spent the majority of his career in Northside ISD. After teaching for two years in the Edgewood Independent School District, he joined NISD as a reading teacher at Neff Middle School in 1993. He moved into campus administration in 1999 serving as assistant principal at both Jones and Jordan middle schools, vice principal at Rawlinson Middle School, principal at Pease Middle School, and most recently, principal at Folks Middle School.

Perez is a graduate of St. Edward’s University in Austin where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology. He earned his master’s degree in Educational Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio.

As the Director of Governmental Relations, Naomi Miller serves as an advocate for Northside ISD on legislative and regulatory issues at the local, state and federal levels.

Miller has 18 years of experience in government relations, constituent services, public policy, public speaking, communications and strategic planning. She began her career in governmental relations at USAA, where she served as a legislative liaison for the company for 8 years. Most recently, she managed the district office for State Representative and Speaker of the Texas House Joe Straus.

Miller is a native of San Antonio and has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of the Incarnate Word, where she graduated Cum Laude. She serves on several boards and commissions, including the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women. She is a proud aunt of two students who attend Hobby Middle School.

Monica Faulkenbery, APR

Monica Faulkenbery, APR, has more than 39 years of experience in public relations and has worked as director of communications for public and private colleges and public school systems in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Before joining Northside ISD in 1999, Faulkenbery served as director of communications for Eanes ISD.

Faulkenbery currently serves on numerous committees for the Texas School Public Relations Association, the San Antonio chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, and National School Public Relations Association. She also has served on a variety of committees for the governors of Missouri and Texas including Teacher of the Year, State Reporting Requirements, and the Texas Air Expo.

Faulkenbery is a frequent guest lecturer for local colleges, universities, and organizations and shares her expertise about public relations planning, crisis communications, special event planning, and media relations.

She has won numerous prestigious awards for her service and talent, including the San Antonio PRSA Tex Taylor Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009,  the TSPRA Most Valuable Member Award in 2009, and the TSPRA Professional Achievement Award in 2016.

In addition to her master's degree in corporate communications, Faulkenbery is Accredited in Public Relations by the Universal Accreditation Board.

Julie Ann Matonis

Julie Ann Matonis first joined the Communications Department in 2004 as the producer/writer/host for NISD-TV. She was named Communications Specialist in February 2013.

She is responsible for managing Northside's social media efforts, writing for district publications, working with the local media, and supporting the district's communications efforts.

During her tenure at NISD-TV, the Texas School Public Relations Association recognized the district's video productions with nine "Best of Category" Awards.

Before coming to Northside, she worked as an Assignment Editor for News 9 San Antonio and as a freelance reporter for Fort Worth City Cable.

Matonis received her Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism from Texas Christian University in 2003 and her Master's degree in Public Relations from Kent State University in 2016. She attended Elrod Elementary School, Zachry Middle School, and was Valedictorian of the first graduating class from Communications Arts High School.

Since 2005, Matonis has proudly served as a mentor for Northside students. She also serves as Vice President for the TCU San Antonio Alumni Board and volunteers with the Junior League of San Antonio.

Travis Kroh
Lead Web Technologist

Travis Kroh comes to the communications department with over 15 years of professional web development experience. He is a graduate of North Dakota State University where he studied Computer Science and Mass Communication. Prior to joining NISD, he provided services for several public and private organizations on web technologies, database development and performance analysis.

As a web technologist, Kroh works with NISD central office departments to develop software for and maintain the nisd.net website.

Marcella Muncy

Marcella Muncy, a career web designer, built her first music and photography website in high school, and was hooked.  The internet and web development were ways for her to show and share her passions.

Muncy joined Northside's Communications Department in 2013.

In the past, she has served as a Web Technologist for North East ISD in the field of instructional technology for over eight years and also has worked with businesses and non-profit organizations.

Carlos Portillo
Web Technologist

Carlos Portillo joined the Communications department in the fall of 2014 as the latest member of the Web Office. As a Web Technologist, he works with his team to develop the district's department and school websites.

Though Portillo only joined the Communications department in 2014, he has been a part of the Northside family since grade school and graduated from O’Connor in 2009.

Before joining Northside ISD, he spent his four year tenure at Apple.Inc as a certified trainer and technician. There he learned how to effectively instruct and communicate technical solutions to both his team and customers, which prepared him for his current role at Northside.

Portillo is a graduate from the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he received his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science with a concentration in Software Engineering. While attending UTSA, he worked with the San Antonio Virtual Environments group for projects such as the National MS Societies' Walk MS and Any Baby Can’s Walk for Autism, where his team developed virtual environments for friends and families to support their loved ones from anywhere in the world.

Dustin Woodbury
Graphics Design Specialist

Dustin Woodbury served in the U.S Navy during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. After his dedication to military service, he returned home and decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer graphic arts at the University of the Incarnate Word. He graduated with honors in 2014.

Woodbury first joined the District as a print production artist for NISD Printing Services. In 2016, the Northside Education Foundation presented him with an “Unsung Hero” award for his service to students. In 2017, he became a graphic specialist for Communications.

He is responsible for District newsletters, and other print/web publications. Woodbury acts as an official photographer for NISD providing photographic support for all publications. He also assists NISD Web Office and NISD-TV by providing original artwork and creative ideas.

Luisa Saldana
Graphics Design Specialist

Luisa Saldana graduated from the University of Texas Pan America with a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts Specializing in Graphic Design. There she found the passion and love for illustration and graphic design.

As an illustrator, Saldana has used her skillset to make a difference by painting several murals throughout the Lower Rio Grande Valley for businesses creating welcoming visuals for children. She was also a mentor though an outreach program called Proyecto Derecho Del Corazon where students learned about their culture and fine arts. She is also proud advocate for the St Judeʼs Foundation providing custom artwork for donations.

In 2015, she served as a Graphic/Print Specialist for Ricoh located at USAAʼs home office. She joined Northsideʼs Communication Department in the fall of 2017 as a Graphic Specialist.

On her free time she enjoys painting, photography and spending time with her family.

Christina Eckert

Christina Eckert
Media Specialist

Christina Eckert is an Emmy-nominated and award-winning journalist with more than two decades experience in television and radio. Eckert joined the Northside Media Productions Team in January 2018 as Producer and Host.

Eckert began her career at KENS-TV in San Antonio, Texas as a weekend morning anchor and reporter. She moved to WLVI-TV in Boston, Massachusetts as the station's weekend anchor and then to KWTV News 9 in Oklahoma City and the noon and 4 pm anchor. Eckert has covered hurricanes that battered the Gulf Coast, devastating floods that affected the Rio Grande Valley and 9-11 from Logan Airport where two of the hijacked planes originated. Eckert has also covered stories that have taken her to Mexico and Italy. She is excited to shine the spotlight on the amazing students, educators, staff and schools in the Northside Independent School District.

Eckert has spent countless hours helping fight Cystic Fibrosis, along with volunteering for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, several children's hospitals and mentoring elementary school children. She’s also been involved in her community serving in the Junior League of Oklahoma City, the RunHers Women's Group, and the Bulverde Youth Soccer Association.

In her spare time, Eckert enjoys running and photography, along with spending time with her husband, Bryan, and their two daughters, Avery and Gillian, their pug, Stewy, and guinea pig, Oreo.

Keith Van Prooyen

Keith Van Prooyen is an Emmy Award-winning photojournalist who came to Northside ISD with 15 years of experience working in television newsrooms.

After graduating from Calvin College with a bachelor’s degree in communications, Van Prooyen started his career as a sports photographer for WOOD-TV in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Mich. In 1997, he moved to San Antonio to become a sports photographer at WOAI-TV (formerly KMOL).

At WOAI, Van Prooyen covered San Antonio’s biggest sporting events, including Sean Elliott's Memorial Day Miracle, Jay High School's improbable State Championship in 2002, all four of the San Antonio Spurs championships, and the University of Texas' 2005 National Championship, where he was nearly run over by Vince Young as he scored the game-winning touchdown.

In 2008, Van Prooyen won an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Sports News - Single Story. That same year, he was promoted to chief photojournalist at WOAI and was given the responsibility for managing the station’s 15 photojournalists.

Van Prooyen joined Northside in May 2011 as a media specialist with NISD-TV. Van Prooyen shoots and edits news and feature stories for Inside Northside Video Magazine, the District’s YouTube channel, and special events.  

Van Prooyen and his wife Michelle have a son, Kameron, and a daughter, Kallie.

Jason Gonzales

Jason Gonzales

Andrew Jason Gonzales joined the Northside ISD team in October 2016 after spending 20 years in television and radio. 

Gonzales found his calling in his senior year of high school when he was hired as the overnight DJ for KBST radio in his hometown of Big Spring, Texas. As his popularity as an on-air personality grew, he hosted the evening show and eventually became the afternoon drive host for the station.  He continued exploring various jobs in the media and worked his way up to become chief photographer for KMID-TV in Midland, TX.  Gonzales finished his newsroom career as a photographer and operations coordinator at KENS-TV here in San Antonio.

During his tenure at KENS, Gonzales' favorite assignments were covering the Spurs championship runs in Detroit and Miami. He also had the privilege to spend two weeks in Rome covering the election of Pope Francis. He met and worked alongside the crew of national and local CBS affiliates and was among the crowd in St. Peter's Square when the new Pope appeared for the first time.

Gonzales received several awards for excellence in photojournalism from the Houston Press Club and the Associated Press. He also served as an operations coordinator at KENS.  His duties included scheduling multiple crews for newscasts, coordinating helicopter and satellite usage, and ensuring crews were ready and able to report breaking news.

As a media specialist with NISD-TV, Gonzales tells the stories of the schools, educators, and students for NISD-TV.

Outside of work, Gonzales enjoys running and spending time with his spouse and their pets.
