James L. Carson Elementary School opened in August of 1998. It covers 83,135 square feet and houses numerous classrooms currently being used by about 800 students. The school's unique design includes two state of the art computer labs, classrooms for special programs, comfortable workspaces for the staff, two separate playgrounds, and a beautiful amphitheater.
Jim Carson, our school's namesake, was born in Burnet County. After growing up on a farm, he went to college to obtain a degree in agriculture. However, his education was interrupted by a stint in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After the war, he returned to school and got his teaching certificate in 1956 from Southwest Texas State Teacher's College. That same year, he started what would become a 35-year career as an educator in the Northside Independent School District. He served those years as principal at five different elementary schools.
Retired since 1989, Jim Carson demonstrates his continued devotion to the children of Northside by volunteering and mentoring at Carson ES.
