Blessings in a Backpack is a nonprofit organization striving to support 62% of elementary school students in America who qualify for the free or reduced-price meal program. Students that qualify for free or reduced meals often do not receive the right amount of nutrition on weekends, which can negatively affect their performance in the classroom. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health, and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program.
Each Friday during the school year, students supported by Blessings in a Backpack will be given a certain amount of food to ensure that they don’t go hungry over the weekend. Our mission is to help support 150-300 students at Carnahan Elementary School in order to decrease the number of children that go home hungry on the weekend. The program will begin at the start of the next school year, Monday August 26, 2013.
