Board of Trustees

Elected by the people to govern Northside Schools, Trustees are the guardians of the public trust and, through the policies they make, are ultimately responsible for our schools. This responsibility and the accessibility of Trustees to the voters make the Board one of the purest examples of democracy in our society.

Northside Trustees represent about 208,000 households located in 355 square miles in northwest Bexar County and parts of Medina and Bandera counties. Northside continues to be the “destination” district in San Antonio for many families seeking a quality school system for their children and for employees seeking a quality place to work.

The Healthy Start: Food, Fitness and Fun project is in full swing in Northside schools, thanks to a $2.6 million federal grant. NISD is in the third year of this grant with students getting fit while having fun.

Celebrating its 20th year, the Northside Education Foundation (NEF) will recognize six outstanding NISD graduates as Pillars of Character at its annual gala. These six outstanding graduates include an elected official, a singer/songwriter, an optometrist, a businessman, a doctor/professor, and an architect.

What child hasn’t dreamed of going to outer space at one time or another? Well, for some students from Hobby Middle School that dream will come true when an experiment that they worked on last school year is placed aboard the International Space Station sometime in mid-to late October.

For the sixth consecutive year, Northside ISD can claim a Region 20 Teacher of the Year. The 2015 Region 20 Elementary Teacher of the Year is Gina Reina, a gifted and talented teacher at Wanke Elementary School.

Registration for Northside ISD’s Learning Tree after-school care program is ongoing at 81 neighborhood schools including all elementary schools and six middle schools.

Thirty-nine thousand students at 49 Northside ISD schools will receive free breakfast and lunch this coming school year thanks to the federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act which will provide the financial support needed, according to Dr. Brian T. Woods, superintendent.

Because we want our parents to stay informed, NISD has several ways that parents and other interested citizens can stay informed about the successes and challenges of San Antonio’s premier school district, as well as news about their children’s schools.

Before 103,000 students arrive for the first day of school on Aug. 25, a brigade of new teachers first have to be schooled. More than 700 new and new-to-Northside ISD teachers went “back-to-school” during New Teacher Academy, an intense three-day professional development designed to share the culture and the expectations of South Texas’ largest school district.

Education Service Center, Region 20 has named the Northside ISD Board of Trustees the 2014 Region 20 Honor Board. (Region 20 encompasses 17 Central Texas counties and 52 school districts.) The NISD Board now advances to the Texas Outstanding School Board competition.

School districts across Bexar County have united behind a campaign to emphasize the benefits of traditional public education. Their efforts were recognized by the Texas School Public Relations Association (TSPRA) who presented the “Bright Idea” award to the 15 Bexar County school districts for their “Go Public” campaign, a multi-faceted public information and awareness campaign.
