Three prominent figures in national politics and higher education visited students at John Jay High School and the Science and Engineering Academy to start the 2013-2014 school year. US Representative Pete Gallego, US Representative Joaquin Castro, and UTSA President Dr. Ricardo Romo made trips to JJHS / SEA during the first semester of school to visit with students about the importance of education in their lives and how it has impacted their respective careers. Representative Gallego, visiting in September, shared his story of growing up in a hard working family in Abilene and overcoming obstacles in his path to achieve a higher education and ultimately become a lawyer and member of the US Congress. In October, Dr. Ricardo Romo shared with students his story of growing up in San Antonio and his path to becoming the leader of a top university. Later that same month, Representative Castro, shared about the high value his family placed on education and his experiences at Jefferson High School, Stanford University, and Harvard Law School. Students were able to ask questions and interact with all three speakers and reported that they were inspired and motivated after listening to the success stories of US Representatives Gallego and Castro as well as UTSA President Romo.
