John Jay High School and the Science and Engineering Academy received national recognition by appearing on the list of the best schools in the Nation. Every year Newsweek Magazine lists the top 5% of American public high schools based on the number of college level tests given at each school. The ranking was computed by dividing the total number of Advanced Placement tests taken by the number of graduating seniors. In order to make the Newsweek list, each school had to give at least as many tests as the number of graduating seniors. Rankings are based on data from the previous year.

The AP Program at John Jay and the Science and Engineering Academy has experienced tremendous growth over the last several years with an open door policy that encourages all students to participate in rigorous and academically challenging courses and programs. The method of ranking schools by Newsweek and the policies of the Science and Engineering Academy are in line with the goals and philosophy of the College Board, the body that administers both the AP tests and the SAT.

It is important to note that the Science and Engineering Academy is not considered separately for the Newsweek rankings but as a part of John Jay as a whole.

The AP Program offers several AP Scholar Awards to recognize high school students who have demonstrated college-level achievement through AP courses and exams. Although there is no monetary award, in addition to receiving an award certificate, this achievement is acknowledged on any AP Grade Report that is sent to colleges the following fall.

National AP Scholar

3 Science and Engineering Academy students qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

AP Scholar with Distinction

10 Science and Engineering Academy students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

AP Scholar with Honor

10 Science and Engineering Academy students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

AP Scholar

53 Science and Engineering Academy students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher.

Through 37 different college-level courses and exams, AP provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced placement and stand out in the college admissions process. Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that our exams are aligned with the same high standards expected by college and faculty at some of our nation's leading liberal arts and research institutions. AP is accepted by more the 3,600 colleges and universities worldwide for college credit, advanced placement, or both on the basis of successful AP Exam grades. This includes more than 90 percent of four-year institutions in the United States. Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and higher graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.
