Description- The ELVIS Project (ESL Language Videos Instructing Students) is a collaborative effort of the Rhodes technology department, ESL teaching staff and ESL parents to enhance and speed the English language acquisition of the limited English speaking students attending Rhodes. Envisioned in late spring of 2007 by Pam Albrecht, Campus Instructional Technologist and longtime ESL/Bilingual teacher, the project began in the fall of 2007. With the help of a Northside Education Foundation Classroom Innovation Grant in November, the acquisition of supporting hardware began.
- The ELVIS Project is training ESL teachers to design and construct quality language acquisition videos based on proven ESL and curricular teaching strategies.
- It is providing the hardware, software, and time to create, allowing the teacher to be better equipped to meet the language needs of their students.
- The posting of the videos to a shared webpage is allowing Rhodes and NISD district teachers to collaborate, increasing the number and variety of videos and their use in all classrooms to increase the English language vocabulary and fluency of all our ESL students in Northside ISD. (Using an email distribution list, all ESL and Bilingual teachers in Northside are notified when new videos are added.)
- By connecting with our ESL community through use of the internet, the ELVIS Project is supporting the hearing and speaking of English at home, families “learning together” to acquire the language at a faster rate.
- Finally, with the addition of the handheld DVD players for any ESL students without computers, the ELVIS Project hopes to bridge the “digital divide” by providing a way to hear and practice English at home for all ESL students.
Accomplishments- Although early in the project timeline, ELVIS is already making a marked difference in the ESL community. The ELVIS webpage, a storehouse for the ESL videos has already topped 750 hits in its short life. Over 25 ESL videos have already been uploaded, with several more underway. Interest has reached into the Bilingual schools as well, with at least one Bilingual school contributing their own videos for a dual language section of the page as well. The project has even been given reports of schools in other parts of the state frequently linking to our page, using it with their English learners. Parents are linking as well, through newsletters from the school, in parent meetings, and through cultural groups in the city.
Impact- While the actual language acquisition rate in students will be measured and compared in May, the positive impact of the ELVIS project is immeasurable. ESL parents’ and teachers’ collaborations empower both to feel an integral of the language acquisition process and enhance the positive image of Rhodes as an ESL Cluster school. Rhodes’ ESL community has embraced the concept, with parents connecting more and more frequently. ESL and Bilingual teachers in the Northside district are connecting as well. Comments received range from, “Thank you so much for sharing these with all of us,” to “What a wonderful idea! I greatly appreciate it.”
Challenge: Most notable about the ELVIS Project is its use of multimedia videos, blending photographs, text and audio to present curriculum concepts to ESL learners in a way that is understandable to someone who does not know the language. In a curricular area with very few resources at all, these videos bridge not only the language, but the challenges of teaching a subject that requires both an auditory and visual conceptualization concurrently. The project has established written objectives to measure oral proficiency rates, number of videos by individual teachers/staff, website usage rates and collaborative meetings with parents and community groups. In each of these areas, current monitoring suggests that each objective will certainly be met or surpassed. |
