Mead Elementary School first grader Michael Gallus and his sister, third grader Victoria Gallus, got the prize patrol treatment Tuesday morning as the 90,000th and the 90,001 students to enroll in NISD.
The siblings, who recently moved back to San Antonio from Kyle with their mother, were showered with gifts donated by local businesses and District departments.
Mother Shelly Gallus, who attended the presentation in the library, wasn't sure what to expect when she got the news via a phone call last week.
"When the principal called, I thought my son was in trouble," she said, laughing.
Her concern disappeared quickly though, as soon as Principal Rebecca Barron-Flores told her that her children actually were being honored.
"It was exciting," Gallus said. "I'm very happy for the children, and I'm very happy for the school."
Superintendent John Folks said the celebration may be a short-lived as
enrollment could surpass 91,000 by the end of the September, shattering projections for new students. Northside ISD continues to grow by about 3,000 students a year and opens three to five new schools a year to accommodate enrollment.
"When we talk about growth, it's always in big numbers," Folks said. "Today we get to put faces on those numbers. It reminds us as teachers that every number we talk about represents a child."
