Thanks to the generosity of Security Service Federal Credit Union, Business Careers High School unveiled the first classroom to benefit from its adopt-a-class program.
Business Careers High School initiated the adopt-a-classroom program to provide a more professional and business-like setting for students in the magnet program. SSFCU, the largest credit union in San Antonio, is the first company to participate in the adopt-a-classroom program.
With more than $7,500 in donations from SSFCU, a banking classroom at Business Careers has been revamped with conference tables and office furniture. The SSFCU classroom also includes a Wall of Honor to recognize winners of the Security Service Financial Literacy Award.
The SSFCU Financial Literacy Award will be given to an Academy of Finance graduating senior participating in the banking classes and will include a $500 cash award. Students must participate in a Financial Literacy Essay Competition to win the award.
“These students are ambassadors for financial literacy and financial education,” said John Worthington, SSFCU’s Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications.
Security Service Federal Credit Union has a long-time partnership with Business Careers High School, providing mentors, guest speakers, internship and shadowing opportunities as well as thousands of dollars in monetary donations for materials, supplies, and field trips. SSFCU also sponsors several District and Northside Education Foundation events.
“Partnerships with local businesses and community members play such an integral role in the success of our students, and the partnership between Business Careers and Security Service Federal Credit Union is a perfect example of what can happen when schools and businesses work together,” Superintendent John Folks said. “We are so thankful for the generosity of SSFCU.”
Business Careers High School, located on the Holmes High School campus, is one of five magnet programs in Northside ISD and offers students in Bexar County and San Antonio an enriched and focused curriculum to prepare students to succeed in business and related fields. Students may choose from three academies: The Academy of Finance, The Business Management Academy, and The E-Business Academy.
“It’s not every day that a student can actually have fun and be involved in learning,” Business Careers senior Jeremy Garcia said. “It’s an honor being a Business Careers student and also a Holmes High School student.”
