During lunch on Friday, Oct. 10, Rayburn MS 7th grader Jesse Melendrez began choking on some food. Coaches Jorge Garcia and Elias Garcia, along with the campus police officer, saw the student athlete and immediately started assisting him. Garcia performed the Heimlich Maneuver on the student and, after almost two minutes, he began breathing again. During this incident, all of the school's male athletes were in the cafeteria and witnessed the incident. Other coaches escorted them out of the building in an orderly fashion and they remained calm while the student was being assisted. The student's mother was notified and she came to the school immediately. While all the coaches did an excellent job in handling the situation, Coach Elias Garcia, without a doubt, saved Jesse's life.
