The Department of Rehabilitation and Medicine at UTHSCSA has been assisting with Special Olympics athlete physicals since 1995. Each year, 10-15 doctors give free medical exams to our Special Olympians so that they can participate in the program. Physicals are given every three years, so on any given year they are providing medicals to approximately 500 athletes.
Many of the athletes would not be able to participate without this assistance. Parents sometimes lack the resources to pay for a physical or have the time to schedule an appointment. The partnership between UTHSCSA and Northside ISD ensures that these athletes can participate to the best of their ability in the safest environment possible.
It is for this reason that the presigious Northside Citizenship Award was presented to the Department of Rehabilitation and Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
