Fun, free fitness family events offered at NISD campus

July 9, 2014

Northside ISD, in partnership with the San Antonio Sports’ Fit Family Challenge, is encouraging families to get moving this summer and exercise together. To help with this, NISD is offering FREE Zumba and Kid Fit classes each week throughout the summer at Linton Elementary School, located at 2103 Oakhill.

Activities are held on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. Those participating will also receive a free health assessment and nutrition information. Participants in the weekly sessions are eligible for prizes.  Although there are Fit Family Challenge events held throughout the city, NISD continues to host the largest events and have the most consistent participation.

Families are encouraged to exercise for an hour a day, six days a week, and pledge to make healthy food choices. Families who track their activities and food selections on an official Fit Family Challenge tracking log are eligible to win a $1,000 prize at a Fit Family Challenge Big Event. The next Big Event is scheduled for July 19 at Brooks City Base from 8 to 10 a.m.

“It is inspiring to see so many of our Northside families at events,” says Lydia Martinez, NISD’s Director of Adult and Communication Education, who coordinates NISD’s participation in the Fit Family Challenge. “Every year of the Fit Family Challenge program (now in its fifth year), Northside families have won cash prizes. So far, they have won a total of $9,000.”
