May 19, 2014

Northside ISD, in partnership with the San Antonio Sports and City of San Antonio, is holding grand opening celebrations at its three new SPARK parks.

Celebrations will be held on:

·         May 23 at 10 a.m. at Villarreal Elementary School, 2902 White Tail

·         May 29 at 10 a.m. at Passmore Elementary School, 570 Pinn Road

·         Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. at Boone Elementary School, 6614 Spring Time

SPARK is a school park program that turns public school property into neighborhood parks to be enjoyed by the community outside of regular school hours.

It is an initiative of San Antonio Sports in partnership with the City of San Antonio and participating school districts. The UTSA College of Architecture also participates in the planning process.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to have a place where parents can come to walk and enjoy some physical activity with their children,” says Dr. Brian T. Woods, NISD superintendent. “Schools are the hubs of the community and the addition of SPARK parks at several of our campuses extends that role in a new way.”

SPARK brings together the resources of government, school districts, the private sector, colleges and universities, neighborhood groups, PTA’s and concerned citizens to make San Antonio a healthier place.

“This is an ideal shared-use agreement,” says Russ Bookbinder, President and CEO of San Antonio Sports. “It’s a cost-effective way to promote physical activity and provide parks and playgrounds for our community, which we know to be a key in combating obesity.”
