86 percent of students eat school cafeteria meals every day; new menus announced

July 16, 2013

The elementary menu and the middle/high schools menu for the 2013-2014 school year have been announced. Prices are $1 for breakfast and $2 for lunch at the elementary level and $1.00 for breakfast and $2.25 for lunch at the secondary level. Parents are invited to print the new menus, although menu copies will be distributed at the start of school.

“We are constantly working to meet the needs of our customers through new menus and food choices,” says Thomas Wherry, Director of Child Nutrition. “We take great pride in ensuring that quality, service and value are served with every meal.”

In recent years Northside ISD has focused on providing “kid-friendly” foods, with recipes and food preparation techniques that have been modified to reduce the fat, trans fat, salt and sugar content of the meals, while maintaining the required level of essential nutrients. They have also increased the fiber, fruit and vegetable content of the meals.

All meals provided by NISD meet or exceed federal and state dietary and nutrition requirements.

There are several new menu items this year including cheesesteak sandwiches and popcorn chicken salad. On a typical lunch day, the department expects to serve between 25,000 to 30,000 popcorn chicken salads.

The Child Nutrition Department serves more than 100,000 meals a day and two million meals a month. For the 2013-2014 school year they expect to serve 20 million meals. Eighty-six percent of Northside students eat lunch every day in their school cafeteria.

To ensure that children are able to purchase daily meals, parents are urged to make sure their children's meal accounts are up-to-date and have adequate funds. They can go online to pay for their child’s meals at www.mylunchmoney.com. Cash, checks and money orders are also accepted at school cafeterias.

For those that qualify for meals assistance, Free & Reduced Meal applications are available online, at the Free & Reduced Office at 7520 Mainland Road, or by calling 397-4517.
