NISD Police to offer free vehicle window etching July 17

July 10, 2013

The Northside Police Department is partnering with the San Antonio Police Department and Bexar County Sheriff’s Office to offer free vehicle window etching to the public.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday, July 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Northside Police Department, 5619 Grissom Road. This is the first time the Northside Police Department has offered this service.

Etching vehicle identification numbers (or VIN numbers) onto car windows helps to deter auto theft by making it harder for thieves to re-sell stolen vehicles and parts.

“The etched numbers also make it easier for law enforcement to track stolen vehicles,” says Northside Police Chief Charles Carnes. “Glass is considered one of the most valuable parts of a car unless it has VIN numbers etched into it.”

Vehicle etching takes less than 15 minutes per car. Drivers need to bring their driver’s license and proof of liability insurance. They will receive a receipt that the service was performed by local law enforcement, and some can qualify for a discount from their insurance company.

July is “Watch Your Car Month” in Texas- go to txwatchyourcar.com for more information on how to protect your vehicle from auto theft.
