June 26, 2013

Northside ISD will open three new schools when classes resume on Aug. 26.  Kay Franklin and Dr. Sara McAndrew elementary schools, and Dr. John Folks Middle School will join the 112 other schools that make up South Texas’ largest school district.  Their new logos are joining the NISD family of school mascots.    More than 101,000 students are expected to enroll for the 2013-14 school year.

Franklin Elementary School’s colors will be columbia blue and red with the Colts as its mascot. School Namesake Kay Franklin is a retired teacher and administrator who touched the lives of thousands of NISD children. She taught at Esparza and Scobee elementary schools, served as vice principal at Elrod and Scobee elementary schools, principal at Fernandez ES, served as assistant superintendent of Elementary Administration, and served as deputy superintendent for Administration.

The McAndrew Highlanders will sport the school colors of red and black. School Namesake Dr. Sara McAndrew also touched the lives of thousands of NISD students as both a teacher and administrator in NISD. She came to the district in 1988 as an English teacher at Taft HS. She was instrumental in the creation of Communications Arts HS and served as its principal for seven years. She was the academic dean at Clark HS before being appointed executive director of Secondary Instruction for the district.

The Folks Stallions will wear the colors of navy and columbia blue and white. School Namesake Dr. John Folks, one of Texas’ most respected and beloved educators, devoted more than 40 years of his life to public education as a teacher, administrator, and statewide advocate for students. He joined Northside ISD as its superintendent in 2002, and during his 10-year tenure, the district racked up numerous honors, all while facing enormous enrollment growth and serious financial challenges. He was named Texas Superintendent of the Year in 2011 by the Texas Association of School Boards for his statewide leadership and unwavering and vocal support of Texas public education.

The official school dedication for McAndrew ES will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 23, for Franklin ES on Wednesday, Oct. 30, and for Folks MS on Monday, Nov. 4. All ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m.
