STAAR retests will continue into July. Northside’s Testing and Evaluation Department provides a complete testing calendar here.

Parents are encouraged to mark down test days on their own calendars so that they can help their child prepare for the tests.

“Children take their cues from adults, so adults should try and set a confident tone by talking about testing as a celebration of hard work and a demonstration of learning,” says Dr. Deborah Healy, Director of Guidance and Counseling. “Assessments are part of how learners demonstrate knowledge and normalizing it as part of the education journey can be helpful and make it seem less scary for children.”

Here are some test-taking tips from Northside counselors

  • Keep routines normal- no last-minute cramming which can lead to more anxiety
  • Get a good night’s sleep before test day
  • Eat a good breakfast the day of the test
  • Dress comfortably- bring a jacket or sweater in case the testing room is cold
  • Take deep breaths to calm nerves
  • Be confident and believe in yourself. Visualize yourself doing well.
  • Try your best
