Four Northside science and math teachers were bestowed this week with a new award that is sponsored in part by San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff.
Representatives of the San Antonio Mayoral/County Judge Outstanding Science and Mathematics Teaching Award surprised six Bexar County teachers in their classrooms this week with a $2,000 check. Northside received four of the six awards.
The NISD honorees include:
The award is coordinated by the University of Texas at San Antonio and funded by H-E-B Grocery Co., USAA Education Foundation, and McCombs Foundation.
There is a nationwide concern that not enough students are selecting careers in math and science, and this award was established to honor quality teachers who help to increase the number of students who choose careers in these fields, said Dr. David Splitek, Superintendent of Lackland ISD and a representative with the awards committee.
"These teachers are committed to their profession and they're committed to kids," Splitek said. "They're willing to try new, innovative things to make sure their kids succeed."
Secondary Science Instructional Specialist Alice Fiedler, who served on Northside's selection committee, said these teachers all make the extra effort to stay current in their fields and find ways to make the curriculum different and fresh for their students.
"They teach the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) but they don't stop there," Fiedler said.
Buchholtz, who has taught science at Jay High School for 36 years, said from a global perspective, he is very conscience of the need to foster a love of science in his students.
"We have to do whatever it takes to engage our students so that they have a working knowledge of science and are genuinely interested it," he said.
