NISD names 10th high school for U.S. Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan

The NISD Board of Trustees voted Tuesday night to name the District’s 10th high school after one of the most influential justices in Supreme Court history. William J. Brennan High School will open in 2010 outside Loop 1604 just west of Seaworld. Another high school that is currently under construction, Brandeis High School, will open in summer 2008.
Brennan High School, formerly known as “Potranco West area” high school, is funded by School Bond 2007 and will relieve overcrowding primarily at Stevens High School, which opened in 2005 and already has capped enrollment. A groundbreaking ceremony for Brennan High School is scheduled for March 26.
Since 1960, all high schools in NISD have been named after U.S. Supreme Court justices. Middle school students who are expected to attend the new high school submit nominations to Board members, who have the final vote on the name.
Brennan was born in New Jersey in 1906 to Irish immigrant parents. A graduate of Harvard Law School, Brennan was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Eisenhower in 1956. His service spanned eight presidential administrations, during which he authored 1,360 opinions. Only one other justice in history authored more opinions, according to the New York Times.
Brennan authored several landmark cases, including New York Times v. Sullivan, which reshaped the libel law, and Baker v. Carr, which ruled federal courts could determine the constitutionality of a state’s voting districts.
Brennan retired from the Supreme Court in 1990 at the age of 84 and died in 1997 at the age of 91.
Louis D. Brandeis High School, the District’s ninth, opens in August and will relieve overcrowding at O’Connor and Clark high schools. The school is located at 13011 Kyle Seale Parkway, behind Stinson Middle School.
