Nine Northside ISD schools were named “The Best Public Schools” in the state by Texas Monthly.

The magazine listed the state’s top 859 schools in its December 2007 issue. There are about 7,460 public schools in Texas.

“It’s a great honor for our schools to get this kind of statewide recognition,” Superintendent John Folks said. “I congratulate the staff, students, and parents at all of these schools for their efforts and their achievements.”

Four elementary, two middle and three high schools in Northside made the list:

Burke Elementary School
Leon Springs Elementary School
Linton Elementary School
McDermott Elementary School
Connally Middle School
Pease Middle School
Health Careers High School
Marshall High School.
O’Connor High School

To find the state’s top-performing schools, the Austin-based National Center for Educational Accountability (formerly Just for the Kids) conducted an analysis to measure how well students did on reading, writing, math, science and social studies standardized tests over the past three years. The top 5 percent of schools are automatically included in the list. The remaining schools made the list because students performed better than peers at similar schools, based on demographics.

A complete list of the schools that made the list and an explanation of the analysis can be found at www.texasmonthly.com. For more information about the methodology used to determine the best schools, visit www.just4kids.org.
