Hundreds of Northside students will help turn Leon Valley into a mecca for art when they put their work on display and up for sale at the annual Los Leones Student Arts Festival Oct. 20.

Inspired by former Leon Valley Mayor Marcy Meffert, Los Leones (“The Lions” in Spanish) teaches students about “the business of art,” while also establishing an active arts community.

The festival, now in its 12th year, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Leon Valley Community & Conference Center, 6427 Evers Road. Admission is free, and there will be a free shuttle bus every 15 minutes to and from available parking at Leon Valley Elementary School, 7111 Huebner Road, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition to more than 2,500 pieces of quality student artwork, those who attend Los Leones, can enjoy music, food, a chalkfest, demonstrations by professional artists, balloon art, and caricaturists.

Two dozen judges representing area businesses will select their personal “pick of show,” awarding $25 prizes in the categories of elementary, middle, and high school art. The awards ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m.

This year’s Los Leones poster and other publicity materials feature the artwork of Victoria Haskins, a senior at Marshall High School, and winner of the publicity contest.

The Los Leones Student Arts Festival is a partnership between the City of Leon Valley, Northside ISD, and the Northside Education Foundation. For information, call 397-8599 or 684-0169.
