Jennifer Cobin, a Communities In Schools intern at Westwood Terrace ES, was presented with the prestigious Northside Citizenship Award for helping to rescue two students who fell into a creek on their way to school Sept. 14. Cobin and another CIS staff member who were on their way to staff development saw two sisters who attend MLK Academy trying to cross a high-water crossing after missing their school bus. Without regard to their own safety, Cobin and her colleague jumped into the creek to rescue the students. The Northside Citizenship Award was created in 1999 to recognize deserving individuals who have made a positive impact on the Northside ISD community. The Citizenship Award is presented to individuals and/or groups whose actions are "above and beyond the normal day's scope of activities" and/or may be unique. This is only the 20th time the award has been presented.
