For the fourth consecutive year, NISD can claim a Region 20 Teacher of the Year - times two for this year. Barbara Purkhiser, a second grade teacher at Galm ES, is the Region 20 Elementary Teacher of the Year, and Theresa Heim, the AVID coordinator and reading teacher at Connally MS, is the Region 20 Secondary Teacher of the Year. Heim recently was named one of six finalists in the state and will now vie for Secondary Teacher of the Year. Both Heim and Purkhiser will be honored at a luncheon in Austin on Oct. 19, when statewide winners will be announced.
