Northside third and fifth graders outpace the state on TAKS

In the first administration of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills reading test, Northside’s third and fifth grade scores easily outpaced the state passing percentages.

District-wide, 92 percent of third-graders passed the reading test, compared to 89 percent statewide. And 89 percent of Northside fifth graders passed the reading test compared to 82 percent statewide.

While the District’s passing percentage for third grade remained the same for 2006 and 2007, fifth graders posted a 2 percent gain from 2006, from 87 to 89 percent.

“I’m extremely pleased with these results and so proud of the students and teachers for all the hard work they did preparing for these tests,” Superintendent John Folks said.

That Northside students maintained or improved passing percentages is an accomplishment, considering more and more students are being tested every year because of explosive enrollment growth in the District.

Folks said the District’s passing percentages on the reading test are expected to climb even higher. Students who did not pass the test on their first try have two more opportunities to retake the test on April 18 and June 27.

Third and fifth grade students must pass the reading test in order to be promoted to the next grade. Fifth graders also have to pass the TAKS math test, which will be administered April 3.
