“Over half of the students advancing to state competition from the Alamo Regional Science and Engineering (ARASE) Fair are from Northside School District,” says Alice Fiedler, instructional specialist for Secondary Science for the District.

The 50th annual ARASE Fair was held this past weekend at St. Mary’s University, with students from over 30 counties participating. Of the 77 students advancing from the regional competition to the state level competition, 40 are from NISD. (Lists of all the awards are available at http://www.arase.org/ )

As in past year, NISD excelled in the competition:

  • Three NISD students placed at levels in the regional science fair to qualify them for the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in May in Albuquerque: Nabeel Vira and Mustafa Iqbal of Jay Science and Engineering Academy, and Nayana Ghosh-Choudhury of Health Careers. (More students are likely to qualify for ISEF through the Texas Exxon-Mobil Science Fair next month.)
  • Of the three campus level awards, NISD schools won two:
  • The Roger Harvey Award for school participation and excellence in scientific review protocol was awarded to Health Careers High School
  • The Sister Joseph Marie Armer Award for school participation and scientific excellence was awarded to Jay Science and Engineering Academy.
  • The Chuck McGibbon Award, a crystal trophy, was awarded to Roy Baldwin, science coordinator at Marshall High School for mentoring Science Fair students for 30 years.
