
Largest number of art students advance to state VASE competition

Northside high school student artists shined at the Texas Art Education Association’s Region 20 Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) art competition held Saturday, Feb. 24 at Clark HS. Not only did Clark HS host the largest Region 20 VASE competition ever, but Northside is advancing their largest number of qualifiers to the State VASE event on April 14 at the University of Houston Clear Lake – 41 pieces of artwork.
Advancing to state from Marshall High School are Katie Andrews, Michael Barclay, Sara Colbert (2 artworks), Kristy Farmer (2 artworks), Jenni Ferguson (2 artworks), Kasandra Garcia (2 artworks), Victoria Haskins, Hudson Hutchinson, Robin Johnson, Jackie Lieck, April Maxey, Drew Paredes, Derrick Payne, Nicolette Perez, Edgar Ramirez, James Roseland, Christel Schlager, Kay See, Paloma Silva, and Matthew Tobias. From Clark HS are Jordan Buck, Andrea Fascinetto, Matthew Johnson, Zach Linge, Chloe Rhodes, Emily Royall, and Alexis Sachs. From Stevens HS are David Hammond, Jonathan Lechuga, and Joel Pitre. From Holmes HS are Daisy Sola and Jonathan Trevino (2 artworks). From Taft HS are Salvador Macias and Kevin Moulder. From Warren HS are Shauna Burns and Ashley McBride.
Art instructors for these students are Linda Fleetwood and Walter Collis of Marshall, Mark Peavy and Marguerite Campa of Clark, Mary Lustri and Chris Warnagiris of Stevens, Myriam Castro and Joyce Muncy of Holmes, Joan Frederick of Taft, and Leroy Garcia of Warren.
Fleetwood is also the Region 20 VASE Director and served as one of the VASE organizers along with Peavy who served as VASE Site Director.
The VASE competition is the largest state art competition for high school students, with over 15,000 entries. Congratulations to the students and their teachers as they advance to the state competition.
