Public education gets star power

May 10, 2011

If you've been watching television lately, you've seen a couple of very prominent Texans making a stand for public education. Tommy Lee Jones, actor; Ed Whitacre, former CEO of General Motors and AT&T; and Spurs players Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili have all filmed commercials for Raise Your Hand Texas, a nonprofit organization that advocates for public education.

If you haven't seen it, the Tommy Lee Jones and Spurs commercials are both posted on YouTube.

Currently, the state Legislature is considering a budget that would cut billions of dollars from school districts across Texas. The NISD Board of Trustees recently voted to cut the 2011-12 budget by $61.4 million and eliminate 973 positions to prepare for a reduction in funding from the state.

Please join our famous San Antonio residents in supporting public education by contacting state elected officials who are key players in school funding decisions, as well as your San Antonio state legislators. If you're not sure who your elected officials are, you can input your address on this Bexar County website.
