Northside ISD teachers and students were featured prominently at the Texas Foreign Language Association conference, held in San Antonio last weekend. More than 1,000 teachers from across the state attended the conference.
Rosa Shely from Briscoe Middle School and Norma Molina from Warren High School received "The Best of Texas" award based on participant evaluations. These teachers presented a session titled "Foldables...From the Study Guides, Mini Projects, To the Fun Ones!" and now will represent Texas at Southwest Conference on Language Teaching in Fort Worth this spring.
Featured entertainment at the San Antonio conference included Cecilia Allen, Spanish teacher at Stinson Middle School who performed a Spanish Flamenco and Middle Eastern dances, and Gilma Orozco from Stevenson Middle School, who performed with the Colombian Dance Company of San Antonio. Pease Middle School's Ballet Folkloriko, led by Spanish teacher Carlos Piliado and featuring Jennifer Tovar-Garcia and Daisy Jimenez, was accompanied by the Holmes High School Mariachi Band, under the direction of Aaron Rios.
Northside's International Languages Department served as the local coordinator for the conference. The planning committee was led by Rosanna Perez, instructional specialist for International Languages, and members included Carlos Piliado, Pease Middle School; Martha Vasquez, Taft High School; Cynthia Driggers, Communications Arts High School; Annette Allard, Warren High School; Liza Pesina, Marshall High School; and Julia Alessi, Brandeis High School.
