The 46th annual NISD Special Olympics ceremonies scheduled for Monday and Tuesday have been canceled due to the cold weather. The remainder of the week continues as scheduled for March 5-7 at Gustafson Stadium.

The 2014 Northside Education Foundation (NEF) 5K Run/Walk and Family Wellness Fair, presented by AXA, takes place Saturday, March 29. In 2013, almost 5,000 participated, setting a record for NEF and the need to super-size from NISD's Dub Farris Stadium to SeaWorld.

Last night, Trustees discussed and took action on several items: approved the District’s 2015-2016 school calendar, approved the use of District High School Allotment funds to subsidize AP exams, recognized several award-winning teachers and administrators, appointed several campus administrators including the new principal at Blattman ES, and discussed a name for a new elementary school.

Mary Lagleder, a History teacher at Warren HS, is a finalist for the prestigious H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, recognizing her as one of the best educators in Texas.

Fifty teams from across the state of Texas including Stevens and Warren high schools competed in the Texas Academic Decathlon (AcDec) this past weekend to a fanfare of well-wishers and supporters. With nine members per team, more than 450 students competed.

Seniors at Northside ISD’s Construction Careers Academy have taken on the biggest challenge of their high school careers- to design and build five 384-square foot micro homes as part of the magnet school’s first Parade of Homes building competition.

While the Olympics plays out on the world stage in Sochi, Russia, an Olympics-type event will be held in San Antonio on Feb. 21-22 as well. The event uses mental muscles and in the end, there will be a ceremony with high school students receiving the coveted gold, silver, or bronze medals.

Northside ISD is holding a Transportation Job Fair to fill 170 positions for bus drivers. The job fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17 at the Culebra Transportation Station, 7001 Culebra Road.

The latest University Interscholastic League reclassifications and realignments were announced earlier this week, and for the first time, all 10 Northside high schools will now compete in the same district, 27-6A.

The NISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously (6-0) Tuesday night to call for a School Bond Election for $648.34 million following extensive study and consideration by the 250-member District-wide  2014 Citizens’ Bond Committee.

More than 600 NISD string students will have the opportunity of a lifetime when they learn from and perform with Mark Wood, a string master and founding member of the internationally- acclaimed Trans Siberian Orchestra. On Jan. 17 and 18, students will participate in Woods’ innovative program “Electrify Your Strings (EYS),” an intensive rock and roll workshop for school music education departments that boosts student self-esteem and motivation.
