Mrs. Pierson says:
The faculty and staff responded not by telling but by showing each day their commitment to a quality education for students in an atmosphere of rigorous caring. I see teachers tutoring students every morning, every afternoon, and even on Saturdays. I walk into classrooms and see students with their hands raised, ready to respond to the teacher’s questions. I see students asking questions….reading in the library, doing homework in the study centers and taking ownership of their school and their learning. I see lights on in the classrooms late into the night and early the next morning as the teachers sometimes beat the custodian to school. I see a list of 21+ clubs, including the African Dance Club, the Photo Club, the Badminton Club, the Comedy Club and the Madscrappers to name but a few. The Luna teachers give of their time and talent so students can feel connected to their school and have a sense of belonging. Yes, we care about learning, but we first care about kids. I see a “sea orange” as I look up in the stands at basketball and football games, the Longhorn T-shirt testimony to school spirit and Longhorn pride. I see the PTA…providing a teacher breakfast, fundraising, sponsoring dances, organizing volunteers and cheerleading in the community for Luna students and parents. I see a library filled not just with book but for a desire to share a love of reading and a readiness to help teachers inspire students to learn…our library is comfortable and inviting, the heart for our school. Although I cannot see the wires, I see a CIT (Computer Instructional Technologist) connected to every student, teacher and staff member---and a CIT who never deletes anyone. I see secretaries asking “how many I help you?” and the nurse saying, “What’s the matter, honey.” I see tired custodians who respond to a million requests with a smile and “I’ll be right there.” I see cafeteria workers who serve over a 1,500 meals a day and still have time to decorate the cafeteria and prepare the daily special for teachers. It isn’t just teachers who make Luna Middle School a caring place to learn. I see counselors, TAKS booklets in hand, providing shelter, guidance and understanding while teaching students to care for one another. I see administrators in the halls, at the bus loop, and at their desks---piled high with paperwork, every ready to respond to a child’s need, a parent’s request, a teacher’s frustration. I see a staff of committed professionals who have come together as a family to help one another as they share their expertise in the classroom. I see smiles every morning as I greet students in the hallways; testimony to the caring environment created by teachers, counselors, custodians, PTA and parents at Luna Middle School. I BELIEVE that Longhorn pride never dies because I see it
every day! |
