Force, Motion & Energy

(K-1) Use 5 senses to explore & identify different forms of energy such as light, heat, and sound.  Explore & predict interactions between magnets (push & pull).  Observe & describe the location of an object (i.e. above, below, nearer to, farther from).  Observe, describe, & demonstrate the ways an object can move (i.e. straight line, zigzag, up, down, etc.).
2-5) Investigate, explore, & differentiate among and the uses of energy (light, sound, thermal, electric).  Observe how magnets are used in everyday life, how position and motion can be changed by pushing and pulling (swings, balls, pulleys).  Differentiate and explore forms of energy including mechanical, light sound, & thermal. Differentiate between conductors & insulators.  Demonstrate that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object, and can be reflected with the use of mirrors, shiny surfaces, & water. Design an experiment that tests the effect on an object.

Matter & Energy

(K-1) Observe, classify properties of objects.  Observe, record, & identify changes in materials caused by heating & cooling (ice melting, water freezing, etc.)

(2-5) Classify, measure, & test physical properties of matter (shape, temperature, mass).  Predict, observe, record states of matter including heating and cooling.  Identify boiling and freezing points.  Combine materials based on their physical properties (i.e. building a tower) & explore & recognize mixtures such as gravel, sand, metal, and plastic.   Identify changes in physical properties such as dissolving salt in water or adding lemon juice to water.

(K-1) Observe, compare, describe, & sort rocks and soil by size, color, & texture.  Observe and describe natural resources (water, lakes, oceans) and give ways rocks and soil are useful.

(2-5) Observe, compare, describe, & sort rocks and soil by size, color, & texture.  Explore how soil is formed by weathering and soils capacity to retain water.  Explore the processes that led to sedimentary rock and fossil fuels.  Identify and compare landforms, slow & fast changes to Earth’s surface.  Observe, measure, & compare weather changes including the water cycle.  Describe the Sun as a star component of gases that provide light, as a major source of energy, & how the Sun and the ocean interact in the water cycle.  Identify the planets, moon, solar system, & the physical characteristics of each.

(K-1) Differentiate, sort, & classify living & nonliving based on basic needs & if they produce offspring.   Gather & examine evidence of basic needs and interdependence among organisms (including the food chain).  Sort plants & animals based on physical characteristics.  Identify & compare parts of a plant & record and observe a life cycle. 
(2-5) Identify basic needs, describe physical characteristics of environments & how they support population and communication.  Investigate and know the difference between producers and consumers, & the way organisms live and survive in an ecosystem.  Identify factors in an environment, environmental changes, flow of energy through food webs, & significance of carbon dioxide-oxygen cycle to the survival of plants and animals.  Investigate & compare insect, plant, & animal life cycles, inherited traits, & learned behaviors.
