Principal - Irene Chavez

Personal History:

I am proud to be born and raised in San Antonio.  While I love to travel the world, I always look forward to coming back to my hometown.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts Degree from Our Lady of the Lake University and my Masters of Arts Degree from UTSA.

Professional History:

In 1988, I founded Challenge High School, currently named Excel Academy. I have been the school principal for 25 years. The primary goal of the school is to provide high school credits for seniors who are at risk of dropping out of school. I believe that we can unlock the potential of our students through a holistic approach that will: attend to their individual needs, facilitate success from previously defeated learners, and improve their self-esteem. Through this approach, students will reap the benefit of the high school diploma and enable them to further their personal goals. I recently was honored for 35 years of service to Northside ISD and was awarded the Top Principal of the Year Award for 2013 at the state LULAC Convention.
