Irene Chavez, Principal Excel Academy, retires

On Monday, May 5, 2014 the coworkers, staff, family, and friends celebrated the announced retirement of Ms. Irene Chavez from the Northside Independent District.  Ms. Chavez started out in NISD as a Truant Officer in 1983.  In 1990, Ms. Chavez realized a long time dream and established a school for at risk students in a former grocery store at the Valley Hi.  The new school, named Challenge High School had the first graduates in 1992.  The school later located to the Northside Learning Center and eventually was renamed to Excel Academy in 2004.  Excel Academy was relocated to its current location at Holmes High School in 2006.  Ms. Chavez has been a staunch advocate for all students throughout her education career which spans from 1973 to 2014.  Congratulations to Ms. Chavez on her retirement!
