Elrod's Mission Statement: The students and staff of Jimmy L. Elrod Elementary School recognize and validate diversity and individuality of all the members of its school community to promote success personally, socially, and intellectually.

We will foster a positive and supportive environment where all children can learn when provided with modeling, positive reinforcement, open-ended activities, choices and opportunities to be divergent thinkers.

We will provide a foundation from which students can be successful by building a unified partnership among students, parents, teachers, and community to achieve excellence. top

Our Name Sake: Elrod Elementary was named for Jimmy L. Elrod, a former state school board member who is also active in San Antonio civic, business, and educational communities. Mr. Elrod was a member of the Northside School Board of Trustees from 1963-1969 and served as president two of those years. During his years of service, district enrollment increased from 8,100 students to 19,100 students. Also, during his six years as trustee, five schools opened their doors. Mr. Elrod served on the State Board of Education from 1973-1982 and was appointed to the Governor's Select Committee on Public Education. He chaired the Permanent School Fund Committee for four years and also served as the chairperson of the SBOE Rules and Planning. Mr. Elrod lives in Northwest San Antonio with his wife, Shirley. They are both frequent visitors to Elrod Elementary.

At Bit of History: Elrod opened its doors to the community in 1988. At that time George H. Bush was President of the U.S. and NISD became the fastest-growing school district in the state of Texas. The land that our school was built on was owned by the Heath Family who still live in our area. The Heath Family sold pieces of land in the early 1980's. One parcel was sold to an individual who later went bankrupt. It was then owned by a banking/investment group, who in turn, sold the property to NISD. Roads that surround Elrod Elementary were named by Mr. Heath after he built these roads. Heath Lane and Heath Circle Road were named after his family name. Roy Lane was named after Mr. Heath's son. Low Bid Lane was Mr. Heath's nickname and Clyde Dent Road was named after a friend of Mr. Heath. top (If you personally know earlier history about this area and land, please email our webmaster at webmaster@elrod.net)
