Citizenship Awards

Northside Citizenship Award

The Northside Citizenship Award was created in 1999 to recognize deserving individuals who have made a positive impact on the Northside ISD community. The Citizenship Award is presented to individuals and/or groups whose actions are "above and beyond the normal day's scope of activities" and/or may be unique.

In the past, this prestigious award has been presented to a teacher who saved the life of a fellow teacher by administering CPR in the classroom, to two bus drivers who alerted the authorities when they spotted an overturned car with the driver still inside under a bridge; and to a group of Country/Western musicians who donate their time and talent to perform to Reddix students on a regular basis, among others.

Elias Garcia

Coaches Jorge Garcia and Elias Garcia, along with the campus police officer, saw a student choking during lunch. Garcia performed the Heimlich Maneuver on the student and, after almost two minutes, he began breathing again.

Jack McCracken

Jack McCracken, while at a weekend Boy Scout camp at Perdenales Falls State Park, noticed that a four-year-old had fallen into the river and was struggling to stay afloat. Without hesitation, Jack intercepted the child as he passed by, pulling him back across the river to safety.

Julio Maldonado

Julio Maldonado successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver on a fellow ninth grade student who was choking on a piece of hamburger in the cafeteria during lunch.

Ben Trevino

Ben Trevino took a group of students to the Volunteer Services at the VA Hospital. When he entered, he noticed one of the employees trying to perform the Heimlich maneuver on someone who was choking, but due to her arthritis she was not being effective. He immediately stepped in and was able to dislodge a small almond from the person's throat.

Dept. of Rehabilitation & Medicine at UTHSCSA

The Department of Rehabilitation and Medicine at UTHSCSA has been assisting with Special Olympics athlete physicals since 1995. Each year, 10-15 doctors give free medical exams to our Special Olympians so that they can participate in the program.

Brandon and Cassie Denson

Without the aid of nine-year-old Brandon and his five-year-old sister Cassie's assistance, their father might not be alive. The two came to his aid one Saturday morning when, while working on his car in the driveway, the car fell on him, pinning and nearly crushing him. The pair, although scared, ran to several neighbors' homes summoning help.

Marcy Meffert

Mayor Marcy Meffert, founder of the annual Los Leones Student Arts Festival, has been an advocate for education and Northside schools ever since her first child (of 5 children) entered Northside schools.

The Meyer Anderson Band

The Meyer Anderson band, a local Country/Western band, has performed for the middle school and high school Applied Learning Environment (ALE) students for the past five years. The band members have embraced the special needs students with open arms and made every effort to make them feel good about themselves.

Ashley Perez

Ashley Perez, a sixth grade student at Stevenson Middle School, came to the aid of a fellow student who was choking. Ashley quickly performed the Heimlich maneuver on this student and cleared his airway allowing him to breathe.

Clayton Lillard

Clayton Lillard, a 7th grade student at Hobby Middle School, was awarded the 2002 Governor's Volunteer Award for his work in restoring old and used bicycles to give to underprivileged children.

Bonnie Conner

San Antonio Councilwoman Bonnie Conner is being recognized for her advocacy for all children and her support of public education.

Adrianna Alvarez

A student at Braun Station Elementary School had an unfortunate encounter with a piece of peppermint candy that became lodged in his throat. His teacher performed the Heimlich maneuver, saving his life.

State Sen. Jeff Wentworth

State Senator Jeff Wentworth is being recognized for his advocacy for children and support of education for all Texas children.

State Rep. Art Reyna

State Representative Art Reyna is being recognized for his advocacy for children and support of education for all Texas children.

Senator Leticia Van de Putte

Senator Leticia Van de Putte is recognized for her support of education on the Senate's Education Committee and for making Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) a legislative priority in 2001.

Kathryn Van Winkle

A first grade student at Galm Elementary School started choking on a piece of candy. His teacher, Kathryn VanWinkle, heard the shouts for help from other students and, using the Heimlich maneuver, was able to dislodge the candy and save the young man's life.

Suzy Meyer, Madelyn Autry, Jeff Dillahunty, Maggie Brehm and Laura Sowers Decker

Anne Zuber, a Level IV Special Education teacher at Locke Hill Elementary School began having trouble breathing during lunch. Immediately, the Heimlich maneuver was attempted by Suzy Meyer and Madelyn Autry. After Anne passed out from lack of oxygen, Jeff Dillahunty, Maggie Brehm, and Laura Sowers Decker commenced with CPR.

Rowena Falco and Debbie Navy

On Nov. 12, 1999, as two Rhodes Station drivers were completing their morning routes, they happened on an accident scene which involved a car that had rolled off a bridge. The driver of the car had reported her accident but was unable to tell rescue officials where she was located. A countywide search had not turned up anything.
