During the second week in January, the first graders enjoyed hearing many read-alouds of expository texts. Expository texts tell “how to”, teach, persuade, and share research about topics. Teachers and students discussed the main idea of the expository texts and noticed text features the author used such as labels on pictures, different colors or sizes of text, and detailed drawings. The students also noticed that some authors use humor and surprise to get the reader’s attention. But most of all, the students heard the authors of expository texts give many descriptive details about their topics. Now that the students have learned about expository text, they will have opportunities to apply what they learned to their writing. It is fun to read what first graders can teach us!
