Plan your career pathways through the Career & Technology Education Coherent Sequences of courses for Health Science Technology.
Introduction to Health Science Technology
(9-12)
(May not be offered on all campuses) This course
gives an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic, environmental,
and informational systems of the health care industry. The focus
is on career exploration, leadership development, ethical and
legal issues, and the history, economics, and trends in financing
health care. Students will develop a concept of health and wellness
from the perspective of a health consumer as well as a potential
professional in the health care industry.
Prerequisite: None Semester: 1-2 Credit: 1/2 - 1
Health Science Technology I (9-12)
A course designed skills in effective communications,
ethical and legal responsibilities, client care, safety, first
aid, and CPR. This course prepares the student for the transition to clinical or work-based experiences in health care.
Prerequisite: Biology OR Concurrent enrollment Introduction
to HST (Health Careers High School only) Credit: 1
Anatomy and Physiology of Human Systems
(10-12)
Students in Anatomy and Physiology of Human Systems
study a variety of topics that include: the responses of the
human body to internal and external forces; body processes that
maintain homeostasis; electrical conduction process and interactions;
body’s transport systems; and environmental factors that
affect the human body.
Same course listed under the Science Section
(Min. of 40% lab)
Prerequisite: Biology I and Chemistry 1 Teacher Recommendation
Semester: 2 Credit: 1
Health Science Technology II (11-12)
A course designed to provide for the development
of multi-occupational knowledge and skills related to a wide
variety of health careers. Students will have hands-on experiences
for continued knowledge and skill development. Clinical Rotation
- All Schools. Pre-employment Lab at Health Careers High School only.
PR: Biology, Chemistry, HST II (and completed Credit: 2 application
for Clinical Rotation at Health Careers High School only)
Health Science Technology III (12)
Co-op - Marshall and Health Careers (Adv. Pre-Employment
Lab at Health Careers High School)
This occupationally specific course is designed
to provide knowledge and skills for certification or licensure
in an allied health career. Students develop advanced clinical
skills necessary for employment in the health care industry or
continued education in health careers.
Prerequisite: HST II (application for co-op at Health Careers High School only)
Semester: 1-2 Credit: 1-2
Medical Microbiology/ Pathophysiology
(11-12)
In this course, students conduct laboratory investigations
and fieldwork, use scientific methods during investigations,
and make informed decisions using critical thinking and problem
solving. Students will study the relationships of microorganisms
to wellness and disease. They develop knowledge and skills related
to disease prevention by learning the chain of infection, asepsis,
and standard precautions. Pathogenic and nonpathogenic organisms
will be identified to assist in the understanding of specific
diseases, causative agents, and treatment options. Students also
study disease processes and how humans are affected. Emphasis
is placed on prevention and treatment of diseases. Students will
differentiate between normal and abnormal physiology. The course
must include at least 40% laboratory investigation and fieldwork
using appropriate scientific inquiry. Not offered at all campuses.
Prerequisite: Biology and Chemistry. Teacher recommendation.
Semester: 2 Credit: 1
Pharmacology (11-12)
Students will study classification of drugs. They
will learn about drug actions, uses and adverse reactions. In
addition they will study drugs in relation to treatment, care
and restoration of health. (Health Careers)
Prerequisite: HIST I, Biology Semester: 1 Credit: 1/2
Scientific Research and Design (12)
Students conduct laboratory investigations and
fieldwork, use scientific investigations, and make informed decisions
using critical thinking and problem solving. The student actively
formulates a problem related to health science, designs the research
and procedures to be used, and plans a final product that will
involve a formal presentation to representatives of the scientific
community.
Prerequisite: HST I, Teacher recommendation Semester: 2 Credit: 1
