5th Grade and the Butterfly

5th Graders recently studied organisms and their environment. Among the many topics students learned was the topic of insect life cycles. Each classroom had the opportunity to observe most of the stages of the Painted Lady Butterfly. They received larva in a small container, then watched as pupae were formed. Next, students got to see some of the butterflies emerge from their chrysalis. That created quite a buzz in the classroom!! These days they are observing the butterfly flutter around their butterfly sanctuary and drink from their sugar-water cup. Making first-hand observations of an insect's life cycle has been exciting and interesting for students!!
